9th Commandment “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

Truth-telling: Living Out the 9th Commandment

As Christians, we believe that God’s commandments are not just a list of rules to follow, but a guide to living a holy and righteous life. The ninth commandment, found in Exodus 20:16, tells us: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” At its core, this commandment is about speaking the truth and avoiding deception in our relationships with others.

In today’s world, it can be easy to fall into the trap of stretching the truth or telling “white lies” to avoid conflict or get ahead. But as Christians, we are called to a higher standard of honesty and integrity. Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” We are called to be people of truth, not just in our words but in our actions as well.

This means being honest even when it’s difficult or uncomfortable. It means admitting our mistakes and taking responsibility for our actions. It means being transparent and accountable in our relationships, whether with our family, friends, or coworkers. Ephesians 4:25 says, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”

Living out the 9th commandment also means avoiding gossip and slander. Proverbs 16:28 warns, “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and gossip separates close friends.” When we spread rumors or speak negatively about others behind their backs, we not only damage their reputation but also harm our own integrity. Instead, we should seek to build others up and speak words of encouragement and affirmation. Colossians 4:6 says, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

As we strive to live out the 9th commandment, we can take comfort in knowing that God is a God of truth and justice. Psalm 85:10 says, “Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.” When we seek to live in truth and righteousness, we will experience the peace and blessings that come from walking in step with God’s will.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your commandments, which guide us in living a life that honors you. Help us to be people of truth, who speak and act with integrity in all our relationships. May our words and deeds be a reflection of your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen
